Conventional recycling or disposal in a common container

The most intuitive option for disposing of the product is to place it in a plastic recycling container, as it is manufactured in polyamide 6.

Nevertheless, the current post-consumption recycling systems do not consider the treatment of this type of polymer. It is for this reason that there are plastic separation plants in the recycling process, and a good part of these cannot be reused and end up in landfill. This is the same end that the product will probably have if it is discarded in the general waste container.

It is in this case where the biodegradable nature of our ECOLINE range gains importance. Once the product is buried in landfill it starts to decompose producing fertilisers and thus contributing to the reduction of non-biodegradable waste. It is estimated that biodegradable polyamide 6 will have completely disappeared after 3 years, compared with an average of 50 years for standard polyamide 6 (according to ASTM 5511). This anaerobic degradation process generates biogas (renewable energy).

In the appropriate processing plants, this methane gas can be used for generating electrical energy, biofuels or a gas similar to natural gas for domestic and industrial consumption.

This capacity to generate renewable energy from biodegradable waste does not only help to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, but also contributes to the mitigation of climate change as it reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with the decomposition of organic materials in landfills. This situation is the closest to a closed cycle, as the same product can be produced again with the electricity generated, so the destruction of the waste fittings or conduits can provide the necessary energy for new production. This is one of the reasons why the ECOLINE range contributes to reduction of the carbon footprint.

Natural biodegradation

There is a last possibility, and it is the non-management of waste. That is, the product is abandoned and does not go through the usual collection process.

In this aerobic situation, if the product comes into contact with organic soil it will begin a rapid degradation process, some 13 times faster than conventional polyamide 6 (according to ISO 17556).

This fact implies a significant reduction of microplastics, as there is little time between its generation and its disappearance. As an additional characteristic, the decomposition process converts part of the mass of the product into nitrogen, thus contributing to fertilising the surrounding ecosystem.
